I love that Joya enjoys playing with my vintage My Little Pony’s and I buy her “new” ones regularly, on fleamarkets or collectors fairs. But these retro pony’s usually don’t come with perfect hair anymore, their long manes and tails are all frizzy and tangled up. So I always give them a little treatment in my very own Private Pony Salon and make sure they are all clean and have gorgeous supersoft hair before I give them to Joya.
tip: the following tutorial also works perfectly on Barbie dolls hair!
To wash your pony’s, you’ll only need a few simple supplies that you probably already have at home. The most important supplies are a shampoo/conditioner, bobby pins, paper straws & a scissor, a hairbrush and a towel. For the real dirty pony’s you could use soap and a toothbrush to give their bodies a soft scrub but mine didn’t needed that.
Okay, let’s go wash some pony hair!
Ik vind het zo fijn dat Joya graag met mijn oude My Little Pony’s speelt! Daarom koop ik nog regelmatig “nieuwe” paardjes op rommelmarkten en vooral op de verzamelaarsbeurs in Utrecht kun je altijd mooie exemplaren scoren! Maar deze retro pony’s hebben meestal doffe kapsels vol klitten en knoopjes, met geen mogelijkheid krijg je er nog een kam doorheen. Daarom geef ik ze altijd eerst even een make-over voordat ik Joya ermee laat spelen.
Tip: onderstaande kun je ook toepassen op Barbie haar!
Je bent maar een paar simpele dingen nodig om je pony’s te voorzien van een bos stralende superzachte krullen; een shampoo of conditioner, schuifspeldjes, papieren rietjes en een schaar, een borstel en een handdoek of theedoek. Voor de echt viezige pony’s kun je een oude tandenborstel en zeep gebruiken, om ze zachtjes schoon te schrobben maar dat hadden mijn nieuwe vintage paardjes niet nodig.
Okè, daar gaan we!
You’ll need to cut up the straws in little pieces. After you’ve washed the pony’s you can use these along with the bobbypins to create curls in their hair.
Knip de rietjes in stukjes en na het wassen kun je deze gebruiken om het natte haar omheen te wikkelen en vervolgens vast te zetten met een schuifspeldje. Zo kun je heel simpel mooie krullen creëren!

Ziehier onze kleine retro pony squad! Ze zien er helemaal geweldig uit behalve hun haren, die kunnen wel een beetje liefde en verzorging gebruiken!
Make a little bath for your pony’s and use some of your favourite shampoo or conditioner to wash their hair with. I used Fun from Lush, I love how soft and shiny it makes our own hair and they smell amazing! These products are vegan, not tested on animals and handmade and because of their clay-like texture they are so much fun to use! Crumble a small piece under a running tap for lots of bubbles! It did not stuck on the ponies hair (like it doesn’t do on humanhair either) and it will give the hair a lovely but subtle smell!
Maak een klein badje voor je pony’s en gebruik een beetje van je lievelingsshampoo of conditioner om hun haren mee te wassen. Ik gebruikte Fun van Lush, ik hou ervan hoe zacht en glanzend dat ons eigen haar maakt en het heeft een heerlijke maar subtiele geur. Deze producten zijn vegan, niet getest op dieren en handgemaakt! En de klei-achtige textuur maakt dit product extra leuk om mee te spelen! Verkruimel een stukje Fun onder een stromende kraan voor extra veel bubbels! In tegenstelling tot wat je misschien zou verwachten blijft het niet plakken in het haar, dat doet het overigens op mensen-haar ook niet!

Laat de pony’s maar even lekker in het badje liggen…
You can clean all types of ponies this way except if they’re battery operated, ofcourse!
Je kan op deze manier alle soorten My Little Pony’s schoonmaken, behalve die op batterijen werken. Dûh…
Take your time to clean their bodies too while you let their hair soak in the water.
Neem de tijd! Terwijl je hun haren laat inweken in het warme water kun je ondertussen hun lichaampjes schoonmaken, indien nodig.
10 to 15 minutes later… Time to take them out of bath!
Tien a vijftien minuutjes later, tijd om ze uit bad te halen!
Next, rinse your pony in a little bowl with clear warm water and make sure you get all of the conditioner/shampoo out of her hair.
Nu is het belangrijk om hun haren goed uit te spoelen. Gebruik hiervoor een badje met schoon warm water.
Dry them off with a clean towel, brush their hair and let their hair dry naturally or…
Droog ze vervolgens af, kam hun haren en laat ze aan de lucht drogen of…
You could use the straws to roll the hair onto and use bobbypins to keep them in place. Making little braids would also be an option to make cute curls.
Je kunt de rietjes gebruiken om het natte haar omheen te rollen. Zet ze daarna vast met een speldje. Kleine vlechtjes maken kan natuurlijk ook, hiermee kun je ook leuke krulletjes/golfjes in het haar creëren.
The next day! Yeah, the pony’s need some time to dry their hair! Time to remove the bobbypins and braids. After that just comb through a little bit with your hands.
De volgende dag! Jup, de pony’s hebben wel even de tijd nodig om te drogen. Tijd om de speldjes en vlechtjes eruit te halen. Gebruik je handen om voorzichtig door het haar te “kammen”.
Tah-dah! Look at these pony’s and their gorgeous shiny curls! The hair has a lovely subtle sweet smell and feels super soft!
Tah-dah! Je pony’s hebben nu prachtige glanzende krullen! Hun haren hebben een subtiel zoet geurtje en voelt super zacht aan!
